Fashion show in Athens Fashion Week

“Bodies out of frames” collection

We are excited to announce our upcoming fashion show at the 22nd Athens Xclusive Designers Week (AXDW – axdw.gr) which will take place at 5.30pm on Sunday, October 22 at Zappeion Hall, Athens.

After winning the “Best New Designer” award at the New Designers Awards of the 21st AXDW last spring, Avgousta Theodoulou travels from Paris, where the homonymous brand is based, back to Athens to present her new S/S 18 collection of womenswear entitled “Bodies out of frames”.

Avgousta’s signature is to combine complex handmade techniques with classic fine tailoring, in order to create garments with innovative and artistic forms that aim to be wearable at the same time. Avgousta insists once again on using high quality natural fabrics like linen, organic cotton, and silk.

The concept of the “Bodies out of frames” collection

“Frame” is a fundamental element in human perception. Literally, it highlights a part of physical space while at the same time capturing and restricting the content into its boundaries. Frames are also building blocks of one’s personality and how she understands the world. Each frame may be nonempty (highlighting some concept, experience, idea, concern, or knowledge) or empty (highlighting needs, desires, ambitions, or ignorance). In both cases, a frame stresses either its content – when exists, or the absence of content making more intense the sense of emptiness and unfulfillment (desires and the goals that are yet to be achieved).

The “Bodies out of Frames” collection has a dual interpretation. Firstly, it considers the human as a composition of various frames. Secondly, it refers to the human figure which embraces its weaknesses in order to make a step further out of its frame, beyond emptiness or restriction.

Inspiration for this collection have been the works of artists like Jean-Louis Corby and Isabel Miramontes that represent human being in all the ambiguity of its power and fragility through incomplete forms that remain though dynamic and flexible, and also Karl Blossfeldt‘s “Delphinium” who photographed plants creating higher artistic forms while growing and interacting with their environment. His photos were colorless and focused on plants’ structural details.

Όταν έφευγα από την Ελλάδα το 2012, μετά από 12 ολόκληρα χρόνια στα Ιωάννινα, εκ των οποίων τα τελευταία 7 εργαζόμουν σαν καθηγήτρια πληροφορικής σε διάφορα εκπαιδευτικά ιδρύματα, δεν φανταζόμουν ότι θα ξαναγύριζα το 2017 να ξανασυστηθώ με μια νέα επαγγελματική ταυτότητα

σε ένα νέο περιβάλλον λαμβάνοντας μέρος σε ένα από τα μεγαλύτερα event της Ελλάδας, το 21st Athens Xclusive Fashion Week. Πόσο μάλλον ότι θα κέρδιζα και το πρώτο βραβείο “Best New Designer Awards”.

H απόφαση μου να επενδύσω τρία ολόκληρα χρόνια, πηγαίνοντας πίσω στα θρανία για να μελετήσω με ένα πολύ διαφορετικό τρόπο από ότι είχα μάθει μέχρι τα 30 μου χρόνια, έχοντας σαν οδηγό κυρίως τη φαντασία και λιγότερο την επιστημονική γνώση, έχει αρχίσει να ανταμείβεται με τον καλύτερο δυνατό τρόπο.

Οκτώ μόνο μήνες από την απόκτηση του πτυχίου Fashion Design and Technology του IFA Paris, μετράω ήδη δύο σημαντικές διακρίσεις από διαγωνισμούς μόδας σε δύο διαφορετικές χώρες με διαφορετική κουλτούρα και ιστορία (Ελλάδα και Κίνα). Τι θα μπορούσε να κάνει περισσότερο χαρούμενο έναν σχεδιαστή, από το να βλέπει τις δημιουργίες του να αναγνωρίζονται σε διεθνές επίπεδο;

Στις 14/2/2017 σε μια αναζήτηση στο διαδίκτυο που προέκυψε εντελώς συμπτωματικά, ο φίλος μου ο “Google” μου έδωσε ως πρώτο αποτέλεσμα μια ανακοίνωση ότι η παράταση των αιτήσεων στο AXDW θα έληγε την επόμενη μέρα. Το θεώρησα ως «πρόσκληση» να παρουσιάσω στην Ελλάδα την κολεξιόν αποφοίτησής μου η οποία εμπνεύστηκε από την αρχαία ελληνική μυθολογία. Έκανα λοιπόν την αίτηση μου παρουσιάζοντας την μέχρι τότε συλλογή μου. Την επόμενη μέρα έλαβα κιόλας τη θετική απάντηση…

Ξύπνησα τον Αργύρη με ένα καφεδάκι και του ανακοίνωσα ότι σε ένα μήνα φεύγουμε :)! Μέσα σε λίγες εβδομάδες η συλλογή μου έπρεπε να εμπλουτιστεί με επιπλέον κομμάτια για να μπορέσει να παρουσιαστεί στην Αθήνα. Αυτό σήμαινε στρες, αγωνία, δουλειά… Αλλά είναι αυτές οι προ(σ)κλήσεις που κάνουν πάντα έναν καλλιτέχνη να οριοθετεί τη μέχρι τότε τρελή και ανεξέλεγκτη φαντασία του, δίνοντας της επιτέλους σάρκα και οστά.

Φτάσαμε Αθήνα… Την Κυριακή 2/4/2017 όλα ήταν έτοιμα. Το show λάμβανε χώρα στο Ζάππειο Μέγαρο, ένα από τα σημαντικότερα νεοκλασικά κτήρια της Αθήνας το οποίο ολοκληρώθηκε το 1888. Καλεσμένοι ήταν φίλοι, συγγενείς αλλά και vip στο χώρο της μόδας. Πρώτη φορά στα backstage μιλούσαν ελληνικά οι γύρω μου :)! Μάζεψα στο καλάθι μου μια σειρά από νέες εμπειρίες, το πρώτο βραβείο “Best New Designer Award”…

… και να  ‘μαι πίσω στο Παρίσι πιο δυνατή και πιο αισιόδοξη!
